June 2006 Albermarle Event Review The Albermarle event kicked off without a hitch, as the day started there was a bit of cloud coverage but through out the day this passed and revealed a beautiful blue sky. The event had a brilliant atmosphere, the weather could not have been better; it was scorching hot (28 0C) with a slight breeze. The wind was a little touchy at times, sometimes strong and a little crosswind but that didn't stop anyone having fun, it just simply made it more fun and funnier. It was an excellent turn out, much more than first expected with around 20+ modellers. There was a good selection of models including scale models, F3A, Sport, Jets and Fun Fly models. The turn out was quite pleasant. There was some multi engine aircraft flying some circuits it looked quite nice. Ron Burnett flying his fantastic F15 Strike Eagle with an American eagle scheme; his flying and model were truly inspirational. It was a pleasure to meet you. Derek was flying his Composite ARF Extra provided us with low harriers and prop hanging. Tony Robinson was flying his Aeroworks Edge 540 with an improved smoke system setup, (different additive to the diesel) it worked a treat. There were many other flyers flying various models including a member from the Washington club flying a Harrier. There were many models and the turn out was outstanding. The day was great; however the tarmac runway was a little bumpy but nothings perfect. Some flyers had a little trouble with the tarmac and under carriages removing themselves. Some flyers even managed to get some wing tips down on landing (I’m a little guilty), but apart from the bumps the runway was very well suited to flying. The site itself has a great deal of airspace and some moderate facilities on location like on site parking and toilet facilities. The runway isn’t too bumpy just some minor holes as the runway is no longer used or maintained. There aren’t many obstructions, just some lamp posts to the left, part of the compound these are easy avoided however as they are right out of the way of the flight path. Overall the fly in was a great success with a lot of flyers coming out for a fly, it was a great day and an excellent event. It gave every flyer the chance to fly on a good location and make friends, exchange information and basically have a good laugh. Encore encore!
